What is the difference between a 200gsm sleeping bag and a season 2 sleeping bag?

I am going to kenya in just over a week and I need to get a sleeping bag. In the itinerary it says I need to take a season 1 or 2 sleeping bag because it will be hot, the only problem is most sleeping bags do not state this on them. I was wondering how you can relate this to gsm? Thanks a lot

The season rating depends on other factors as well, so the gsm can’t necessarily be translated easily into a season rating. If the manufacturer does not supply a rating then the bag has probably not been tested, and this would make me a bit suspicious.

On a good quality bag, a 250 gsm would probably be a 2 season bag and a 350 gsm would probably be a 3 season bag. The 200gsm has a comfort rating of +4Âșc so is about a 1 to 2 season bag.

A liner will provide a bit of extra warmth, depending on the type of liner. They are also easier to clean than a sleeping bag so are a good idea from that point of view as well.

  2. Great camping information. Enjoyed your blog and I’ll be back to check it out!!
